Not bad for a party game...

Reviewed by Jaymoon on April 24, 2007  |  report this review

Wii Play is pretty much a party-game only. You will get bored very quickly playing any of these mini-games by yourself.

There are 9 games included. I'll just give a brief review about each one...

Duck Hunting: Just like the classic. Fun to play, but unfortunately there are only so many rounds/levels that once you complete it, you are saying "That's it?". It would have been nice if you could go on forever with increased difficulty.

Find the Mii: This game can be very fun and frustrating at the same time. The concept is simple. You pick out a specific Mii in a crowd of other random Miis, depending on what the game tells you, you are looking for. If they say to find "The fastest Mii", then you pick out of the crowd, that is moving the fastest. It's pretty easy at first, but after a couple of rounds, it gets boring fast, and some of the ones they want you to find, are just impossible. (Find 3 odd Miis out, out of about 40 Miis)

Ping Pong: The ping pong on single player may seem like it's tough, but it's very easy to score a perfect 100/100. You simply move the paddle slightly to the left or right. On multiplayer, whichever player is on top has a serious disadvantage, so matches with 2 players never last very long.

Some Bubble Thing: The idea is you have to match the Mii pose on these bubbles that fall. Very boring quickly, and impossible to play after a couple rounds pass.

Air Hockey: The air hockey game is exactly what you would imagine it to be. Only complaint is the game has these annoying neon lights everywhere. Other than the bad choice of colors, it's an OK game single or multiplayer.

Pool: The pool is very tough to get used to. The game is 9-Ball only, but it doesn't even follow the rules. Normally hit the correct number ball and knocking in the 9-Ball would result in a win. Not in this. You only win, when you sink the last ball.

Fishing: The fishing is pretty fun on multiplayer, but gets old fast.

Cow Racing: Unfortunately the most fun mini-game on the disc. You race your cow against another player (multi), or against the clock (single). There are items you have to pick up along the way, and jump or avoid obstacles in the road. Great game for multiplayer.

Tank Shooter: Optional use of nunchuck (instead of controlling with the D-pad) for this game. You have to move around and shoot computer tanks. Can be challenging at times, but really the only game that offers variety as you progress.

Wii Play is not bad if you have some friends over. But after you play through all the games, it's boring. At least they could have included something like the Wii Fitness such as in Wii Sports, that makes you want to come back and play it again later.

Wii Play. Do you?

Reviewed by Smaug317 on May 01, 2007  |  report this review

Wii play retails $49.99 and comes with a Wii-Remote. The game will teach you how to use the Remote. (...)

Anyway, Wii Play has 9 games on it: Shooting Range (Duck Hunt), Find Mii, Table Tennis (Ping Pong), Shape Mii, Laser Hockey (Air Hockey), Billards (Pool), Fishing, Cow Racing, and Tanks.

Half the games on here are hardly playable. (Find Mii, Table Tennis, Shape Mii, and Fishing)

The other half are very fun for Multi-Player. (Shooting Range, Laser Hockey, Billards, Cow Racing, and Tanks)

Lasting thought? Though, none of the games will keep you playing and playing it's not that bad of a party game, and for that price ($10 after the Wii-Remote), it's really a steal.

Rating: 3/5. (7/10)

The only good games are ping-pong, tanks, and the shooting one, but, you do get an extra remote too!

Not Great

The games on Wii Play are not amazing, with flukes here and there. In my opinion, not a copy would be sold if it weren't for the extra Wii remote. I think Nintendo anticipated this too. If you live in a large family that wants to play the Wii, an extra remote could come in handy. Your choice!

I'm not sure why, but this game tends to get bad reviews. I think it's a fantastic game to pop in when you have a few friends over. I seem to enjoy all 9 of the games. Fishing and billiards are probably my least favorite but they're still decent. If you're buying a second wii remote, you might as well pick this one up.

Fun but not good

I got this opening day I pretty much got it for the bonus wiimote but I played it for awhile I have unlocked gold medals but it took awhile because the game seemed to get boring too fast. The multiplayer is kind of fun but I think wii sports is better for multi. It's kind of fun trying to get all the way up to platinum medals (still trying to get all plats) I usually just play one player with my friends instead of 2 player. It is only 2 player and not 4 player what got me pretty mad. I also didn't really like how the games had like no movement just aiming at the screen

More of a training tool than a game

Reviewed by paisjose on August 13, 2007  |  report this review

At first, I was all excited to get a game and wiimote together for just 10 bucks more....but that is about what the game is worth...10 bucks. This collection of minigames is set up more like a training session than for the purpose of longterm fun. Each minigame gets you to hold the wiimote a different way, but you don't end up using that new skill on anyother game than that one. The multiplayer games are the most replayable; but even then, they get tiresome.
You get what you pay for on this one.

wii play

this game is an ok game in my opinion. the game has some good mini-games like pool and tanks, but the fact that it lacks more than 2 player play is really bad. Also in some of the games the controls are little f***ed up. however it is a fun game to play and it does make a good party game, plus the free wii-mote isn't that bad. Overall they need to add some features but it still is a pretty awesome game.

Only for the Wiimote

Reviewed by kpod56662 on August 24, 2007  |  report this review

Its only good if you want a overpriced game with a wiimote
Only like half of the games are good, they all suck in single player, and even in multiplayer once you do every game its not worth playing again
If they sold the game seperately w/o the remote the sales would probably drop by like 50% or somethin like that

Nice Price

Reviewed by kngzmexican on September 17, 2007  |  report this review

Wii Play from Nintendo is designed as a complementary piece to the Wii remote. The compilation of nine varying minis comes packaged with the peripheral for $49.99 -- or approximately $10 more than a standalone pointer. The price is definitely right and for good reason: Wii Play is incredibly shallow; in fact, by comparison it makes the already-flimsy Wii Sports look like a Zelda adventure in scope. Wii Play's mini-games are designed to last for minutes at a time and not hours, which is one of its shortcomings. That being true, for about the price of a movie ticket, it's much easier to forgive any of the project's weaknesses and embrace its strengths, even if they are short-lived.

Naysayers said Wii Sports was nothing but a "technical demo," an argument that we defended again and again because it was only half true. The title definitely debuted the fundamental mechanics of the Wii remote and simultaneously showcased its potential. For those very reasons, yes, it was a technical demo of sorts. But its existence was not restricted to these purposes. It was also a fun game in its own right and, indeed, continues to be one of the most-played and most-loved offerings on the Wii console. In hindsight, if Nintendo had released Wii Sports for a moderate price, we would have certainly recommended it as a standalone affair.

Wii Play, on the other hand, possesses neither the depth nor the inspired gameplay mechanics to stand as a true videogame or, for that matter, on its own merit. It feels much more like a technical demo, albeit a robust one.

The title is comprised of nine mini-games, each of which can be blown through in a matter of minutes. In Shooting Range, which is a poor man's Duck Hunt, you use the pointer to shoot down targets, cans, and even flying saucers, but rarely do you actually get to pick off ducks. If you therefore played Duck Hunt so many years ago and are hoping that the experience is duplicated in Wii Play, you will very likely be disappointed because the nostalgia element is only vaguely tethered to the mini-game. It really looks and plays much more like a Duck Hunt tease. On top of that, the target controls, while accurate, are less responsive and intuitive than those in similar shooting-style modes in Wario Ware. And with only five targeting levels to mention, all of them over in less than a minute, the mode is kaput well before you've become a true gunslinger.

In Laser Hockey, one of the more stylized games in Wii Play, you take part in a colorful, psychedelic version of the classic Pong, the difference being that you use the Wii remote to control your on-screen paddle. The presentation is simple, but it looks very clean and polished. Meanwhile, it's got very catchy music that changes dynamically as you score points against the CPU-controlled opponent. You can move your paddle around on your side of the screen and even tilt the remote to add angle to your shots. It works well… most of the time. However, the control is no

The Tank game is worth the $10

Since you have to have another wii remote this game is a nice addition along with it. The only 2 games worth playing are Tanks and the air hockey game. Rating it a 4 because it's only $10 dollars and the tank game though simple is fun and addictive.

Find the Mii is the worst of the all along with that one bubble game. Tanks is also good. Well if you have friend over alot I recommend you buy this game.11

Most people will need an extra controller & for an extra $10, I think it's worth getting Wii Play. Sure, the playability doesn't last long for the owner, but its great to pull out for parties. I prefer the Duck Hunt & Tank games. While the fishing is amusing for a bit, the rest of the games are only good for a fun learning curve on the uses of the wiimote.
